We met up with Don Newman, one of Canada’s most well known journalists who has recently just written a new book “Welcome to the Broadcast”. We met up with him at the Chateau Laurier, a very symbolic location for Don as many parties, meetings and news was reported on here. We spoke about:

– Restaurants he used to go to include Al’s Steakhouse
– Skating on the canal when it first opened in the early 70’s
– Restaurants he frequents now include The Barley Mow on Bank Street, Eighteen, Beckta, Les Fougeres in the Gatineaus
– His favourite embassy parties include the July 4th party at the American Embassy, British, French, Germany and Belgium
– This is not his first book tour
– Does he watch The Newsroom?
– Would he ever work after he had any drinks?
– He was offered the position of Director of Communications for three different Prime Ministers and turned them all down

After the break we discussed:

– What can we expect from Don Newman’s new book “Welcome to the Broadcast”
– How he got started in journalism
– The importance of connections
– Politicians that he remains friends with
– His thoughts on the new CBC contract
– His thoughts on the Parliamentary Budget Officer
– Words of wisdom for future journalists
– We also get to hear him rap a bit!

Here is a clip from Don Newman’s last day at CBC, so amazing seeing some the politicians and co-workers he has worked with over the years say goodbye:
