We met up with Shawn Dawson, the Founder of Fatboys Southern Smokehouse, at his restaurant on Murray Street. He is a serial entrepreneur with boundless energy and also the Founder of the Dream Mountains Foundation. We spoke about:
– Him being the 8th person in the world to climb the 7 highest peaks in the 7 continents in under 2 years
– What brought him to Ottawa (He is living in Brockville now and commutes to Ottawa)
– Activities he enjoys in Ottawa, the Wolf Trail is one of his favorite hikes
– Write to the Bluesfest to get Fatboys as a vendor!
– A fan of Westfest and Westboro
– What made him think of starting Fatboys in the market
– The future of the restaurant and expansion plans
– The Sunday All you can eat Gospel Brunch which was inspired by the House of Blues
After the break we discussed:
– How he heard about the 7 Summit Challenge
– How the Dream Mountains Foundation came about and what it is and how you can get involved!
– What are his motivations behind it
– Everest takes 2 and a half months to climb!
– When is the best time to climb it?
– A crazy story of what happened in Papua New Guinea
– The training process to start climbing the mountains (lots of plyometric and stair climbing)
– The breathing training involved
– Dream Mountains has raised over $500,000 for the 7 charities
– Shawn@fatboys.ca is the best way to get in touch in Shawn in case you have more questions about the charity climbs
– To get on one of the climbs, it is a minimum of $5,000 they have to raise and then they can get personally tutored on training
– We committed to getting onto one of these climbs within the next 5 years, hopefully my knee is okay by then!
He has climbed this!!!!
